Why our DSL is better

Them: 3,000 x 400 Kbit = 1.2 GBit potential per 45 MBit link (27:1 ratio)
Us: 1,000 x 400 Kbit = 400 MBit potential per 45 MBit link (9:1 ratio)

DSL Internet service is delivered to your home or business over your existing phone wire. The telephone company is always at the other end of the wire, regardless of your ISP. Each ISP has its own high speed connections to the phone company to carry DSL traffic to and from the Internet.

Text continued below diagram.

You might be tempted to think that if the ISP is the phone company, then this diagram doesn't apply because the phone company ellipse would be directly connected to the Internet. That is not the case. This diagram holds true even if the ISP is the phone company. They must still route DSL traffic over links specifically dedicated to interfacing DSL to the Internet via DSL access routers dedicated to the task. The network there looks exactly the same.

The high speed circuits between the phone company and the ISP (including the phone company's Internet service) typically have far less total capacity than the sum of all the DSL customers that are carried on it. For example, a 45 megabit connection between the phone company and the ISP may have up to 3,000 customers assigned to it, where the customers have an average bandwidth of 400 kilobits (400K bit/sec) each. If you do the math, you can see that 3,000 x .4 = 1,200 megabits, which is a lot bigger than 45 megabits. This means that if enough of the 3,000 customers try to download big files at the same time, the 45 megabit connection between the ISP and the phone company will be overloaded and start to drop packets. This is far less likely when you have 3,000 customers per circuit than when you have only 1,000. The customers will see their connections slow down, but will not have any indication as to why. The ISP is free to blame whatever they may and there is no way for the customer to validate the ISPs claims.

The difference between Linxure and other ISPs is that we have a policy of assigning only 1,000 customers to each 45 megabit connection. This creates less than 1/3 the bandwidth congestion found on other ISP's networks, especially during prime time. This means that with Linxure, your Internet connections are faster more often, with much less potential for slow downs.

Overloading as much as physically possible is what makes phone company DSL so cheap -- and you get what you pay for. Our live tests of phone company DSL service has shown that actual throughput is far less than our DSL service.

Note: The average connection rate of 400Kbit/sec is based upon real world distribution of 256K, 1.5M, and Premier DSL customer ratios.
