1 NOTE Jefferson Fulcher was from Virginia, according the the 1850 federal
2 CONC census for Alabama. He served with Captain Henry Norwood's Company in
2 CONC the regiment of Col. J. R. H. Acklin's 2nd Alabama Mounted Volunteers
2 CONC in the Creek War. He was a volunteer, rank private, and enlisted for 3
2 CONC months. His service was from June 1, 1836 to August 17, 1836, when he
2 CONC was honorably discharged at Huntsville, Alabama. He lost his discharge
2 CONC papers. He received a warrant (3651) for bounty land of 40 acres in
2 CONC Bellefonte, Alabama in 1851 for his service. It's not clear whether he
2 CONC actually got this land before he died, because Sarah Rash applied for
2 CONC 40 acres bounty land in 1855 after another act of Congress passed. Was
2 CONC this second application for widows?

1 NOTE Henry Clay Fulcher MAY have served with the 2nd Alabama Cavalry,
2 CONC Company D in the Civil War. He lost his arm, but it is unclear whether
2 CONC he lost it in the war or in a hunting accident. He returned home
2 CONC (Bellefonte, Alabama) after the war and could not find his mother or
2 CONC sister. He left for Texas on a steamboat, entering Jefferson, Texas
2 CONC where he bought a horse. He went to Bryan's Mill, Texas, and then
2 CONC Cusseta, where he married. He was the postmaster of Cusseta from 1872
2 CONC to 1920. He was known as "Papa".

1 NOTE The son of a Baptist minister, Earle Eleas Adams was known as
2 CONC "Colonel." He accompanied his parents when they moved from South
2 CONC Carolina to Louisiana in 1853. He enlisted as a volunteer in the
2 CONC Confederate army at the age of 14 years and served four years under
2 CONC General Nathan B. Forest, the great cavalry leader, surrendering in
2 CONC Alabama at the close of the war. Col. Adams laid the foundation of a
2 CONC classical education in a select school maintained by the patronage of
2 CONC Louisiana planters at Clinton, of which a Dr. Dembinski, a Pole and
2 CONC graduate of the German University of Heidelberg, was the head. His
2 CONC advanced education, academic and professional, was secured at
2 CONC Centenary College, then located at Jackson, Louisiana from which he
2 CONC obtained his Master's degree. At 20 years of age he married Miss Emma
2 CONC Miller, a daughter of a Lutheran minister, Rev. J. J. Miller, and a
2 CONC niece of Rev. J. C. Miller, president of Centenary College. He was
2 CONC admitted to the bar in 1869 and practiced law for five years in
2 CONC Louisiana, moving to Crockett, Texas on January 14, 1875, where he
2 CONC made his home. For two years, 1878-1880, he served as county attorney
2 CONC of Houston County, and for six years as district attorney of the third
2 CONC judicial district. He then retired from active politics and engaged in
2 CONC the private practice of his profession, and at his death was
2 CONC recognized throught the length and breadth of Texas as one of the
2 CONC foremost lawyers, one almost without a peer in criminal practice. At
2 CONC the time of his death he was president of the Houston County Bar
2 CONC Association. Col. Adams united with the Baptist Church in early life,
2 CONC and in his more mature years was a very active member of that
2 CONC denomination.

2 CONT Col. Adams's pension file is in the Texas State Archives, under the
2 CONC entry, "Adams, Earle: Forest Div Cav." An Earle Adams is also listed
2 CONC in the United Confederate Veterans Members Camp #141  1891. In his
2 CONC pension application, Earle Adams said that he surrendered in
2 CONC Gainsville Alabama with Nathan B. Forest. He said that he served with
2 CONC McKowen's Scouts, attached to Powers' Regiment, Louisiana Cavalry. He
2 CONC said that his unit was transferred to Forest sometime in 1864.

2 CONT The following is a letter from Major General C. H. Bridges in response
2 CONC to Comptroller's request in 1930 for verification for Adams's pension
2 CONC application:

2 CONT "J. C. McKeown was Captain of Company F, Powers' Regiment Confederate
2 CONC Cavalry, Confederate States Army, which became a Company of Gobers
2 CONC Regiment Louisiana Cavalry, Confederate States Army, and it is
2 CONC believed to have subsequently served as Company F, Ogden's Regiment
2 CONC Louisiana Cavalry, Confederate States Army.

2 CONT The name E. E. Adams, private, Company F, Ogden's Regiment Louisiana
2 CONC Cavalry, Confederate States Army, appears on a Roll of Prisoners of
2 CONC War Surrendered by Lieutenant General R. Taylor, May 4, 1865, and was
2 CONC paroled at Gainsville, Alabama May 12, 1865.

2 CONT There are no muster rolls on file in this office on Company F, Powers'
2 CONC Regiment Confederate Cavalry, Confederate States Army, nor of Company
2 CONC F, Ogden's Regiment Louisiana Cavalry, Confederate States Army,  and
2 CONC no record of the date and place of his entree into the service has
2 CONC been found."

2 CONT Col. Adams died in his home of pneumonia, as certified by his
2 CONC physician, Dr. J. S. Wootters. He was survived by his wife, two
2 CONC daughters, Mrs. Emma Castleberg and Mrs. Denny Arledge, and one son,
2 CONC Earle Adams. His oldest son, Hon. Joe Adams, who was his law partner,
2 CONC preceded him in death.

2 CONT A J.D. Adams is listed in Capt Wm. White's company of the 11th Brigade
2 CONC Texas Militia. Were they related? The 11th Brigade is the same one
2 CONC that John F. Arledge served in. He couldn't be the same J. D. Adams
2 CONC who is also listed buried in the Glenwood Cemetery with Earle and his
2 CONC family, because this J. D. Adams was only 1 year old when he died.

2 CONC and Harriett came to Texas from Lawrence County, Alabama, They had 13
2 CONC children. John led a caravan from Alabama in November 1853 to a site
2 CONC S.E. of Crockett, Texas, where they established a plantation. They
2 CONC later moved to Crockett. John remarried in 1869 to the widow of his
2 CONC cousin, Ann Arledge, when Harriett died. Ann Arledge was from
2 CONC Tennessee. John came to Texas in 1851 or 1853.

2 CONC meant that he had been given his inheritance earlier. He moved to AL
2 CONC between 1814 and 1818.

2 CONT Cyrus Arledge b. ca. 1783, Fairfield County, SC; d. July 4, 1852,
2 CONC Limestone County, AL. He is the son of Clement Arledge and wife whose
2 CONC name is unknown. Cyrus married Lucy Featherstone around 1807. They
2 CONC were listed as living in Chester County, SC in the 1810 census.
2 CONC Between 1814 and 1818 they moved to Limestone County, AL. The 1820 AL
2 CONC census listed them with 4 boys and 4 girls, with 9 acres cultivated, 2
2 CONC hired hands, producing 4 bales of cotton, weighing 300 lb/bale.  No
2 CONC slaves were listed. His brother, Clement, born ca. 1777, had moved to
2 CONC Franklin County, TN.

2 CONT Cyrus Arledge married Lucy Featherstone. Lucy was born in 1782 in SC
2 CONC to John F. and Willie Colston Featherstone. John F. Featherston(e)
2 CONC participated in the American Revolution, serving with Marion's men.
2 CONC Around 1853, after Cyrus' death, Lucy went with several grown children
2 CONC and their families to Texas, probably along the Natchez Trace. Lucy
2 CONC was around 72 years old. Travel was in wagons and difficult, full of
2 CONC hardships. Son John and family settled in Crockett, Houston County,
2 CONC TX, in Nov. 1853. Sons Joseph Cyrus and William went on to Fannin
2 CONC County, TX, in early 1854. Daughter Lucinda and husband, William S.
2 CONC Wimberly, may have come to TX, also. Lucy died on October 14, 1866, in
2 CONC Crockett and is buried in the Old Glenwood Cemetery at Crockett. (Note

2 CONC College in Clinton, MS, where he "attained a remarkable freedom in
2 CONC Latin, Greek and Higher Mathematics." Upon leaving college, he became
2 CONC connected with the Southern Baptist Publishing House of Memphis,
2 CONC Tennessee. In February of 1875 he moved to Dallas to become associated
2 CONC with Dr. R. C. Buckner as Business Manager of a religious newspaper,
2 CONC "The Texas Baptist" and the "Texas Baptist Book Depository," which had
2 CONC for sale Bibles, religious books and Sunday School supplies. He
2 CONC traveled some for the paper but mainly did the office work while R. C.
2 CONC Buckner did the field work.

2 CONT He was the principal of McKinney Avenue School for six years, and the
2 CONC old Dallas High School (later called the Bryan High School) for two
2 CONC years. He was the superintendent of schools for the Buckner Orphan's
2 CONC home for 16 years, starting in 1900. He had 16 grandchildren when he
2 CONC died of tuberculosis at his home, 5417 Reiger Street, Dallas, Texas.

2 CONC preacher. He was educated at Georgetown College, 100 miles north of
2 CONC Somerset, Kentucky. He received his Doctor of Divinity Degree from
2 CONC Keachi College, Louisiana, and a doctorate of law at Baylor University
2 CONC in Waco. He was a Mason, and there is a R. C. Buckner Lodge named
2 CONC after him.

2 CONC in Captain James Shelby's Company of Colonel Preston's Regiment. His
2 CONC cousin was Evan Shelby. Joshua was wounded in the Battle of Long
2 CONC Island Flats on Holston, 7/19/1776. Joshua was granted a sum for his
2 CONC wounds by the Committee of Public Claims, July 16, 1777. Family
2 CONC tradition says that he would not accept the grant for patriotic
2 CONC reasons, and he thought to be a rich man, not needing the recompense.
2 CONC The Davidson Family History says that he died in 1788.

2 CONC said Joshua was dead.  I then went with him in Wythe Co, VA where I
2 CONC found he owned an Iron Ore mine; right near the house of William
2 CONC Buster.  I head about him in some VA books, and also have a map of
2 CONC Wythe Co. A (Huge) showing where William Buster lived.  It does show
2 CONC Roger Oatts though.

2 CONC Joshua Jones, and he lived north of town, not in Monticello.  I also

2 CONC some collateral lines are.  Looked for the house built in 1166 of

2 CONT mother Isabel Calvert, but the library was closed and no one in the
2 CONC town recognized the farmhouse.  Oh well, a good excuse to go back this

2 CONT This is the 315 yr.anniversary of the arrival of Joshua Hoopes, and I
2 CONC am sad to say no one wants to work on the usual reunion (we had one
2 CONC every 5 yrs.).  Anna Haines, and her two daughters, another cousin
2 CONC from CT, and myself were the only ones from Margaret.  The others are
2 CONC all from Margaret's brother Daniel, whose house is in Chester Co, PA.
2 CONC He was the father of 17 children, and our John, Jr. went to live with
2 CONC them when his mother died when he was 10.  His father died before he

2 CONC child. Daniel was named after Daniel Boone, a personal friend of his
2 CONC father's. Daniel appears in the book, "Sketches of Tennessee Pioneer
2 CONC Preachers." This book describes him as "of powerful frame, standing
2 CONC erect six feet and weighing 250 pounds; voice powerful; mind strong
2 CONC and active; energy unbounded." He moved to Paris Texas in 1861 (to be
2 CONC near his son R.C.) after several pastorates in Tennessee and Kentucky.

2 CONT After his wife, Mary Hampton Buckner, died on the way to Texas, he
2 CONC married again in 1865. The Baptist Standard doesn't give her name but
2 CONC chastized her for open infidelity. They separated but it is unknown
2 CONC whether they divorced. In a letter from Daniel to ??, written in 1878,
2 CONC he says that his present wife is 23 years his junior, and that he
2 CONC married her April 7, 1865. In this letter, he also mentions that he
2 CONC has a daughter, Eunice Williams, living nearby. Could she be the
2 CONC daughter of Daniel and his second wife?

2 CONT The book, Homeward Bound, says that Henry moved his family from North
2 CONC Carolina to South Carolina AFTER Daniel was born, implying that Daniel
2 CONC was born in North Carolina. However in the book, R. C. Buckner's Life
2 CONC of Faith and Works, Daniel is stated being born in Lawrence District,
2 CONC South Carolina.  From South Carolina, Henry moved his family to
2 CONC Warrenburg, Cooke County, East Tennessee about 1807. Daniel and Mary
2 CONC moved to Madisonville Tennessee later.

2 CONT JOSEPH CYRUS ARLEDGE, b. 10-19-1812, Chester County, SC, was the son
2 CONC of Cyrus and Lucy Featherstone Arledge. His family moved to Limestone
2 CONC County, AL between 1814-1818. He married Lydia Ann Slaughter on
2 CONC September 29, 1833. He was 21, she was only 15. Their first child was
2 CONC born the next year. After the middle of 1850, probably between
2 CONC 1851-1853, they moved to Fannin County, TX. It is not known if all
2 CONC their connected families moved to TX at the same time. Youngest
2 CONC brother, John, moved to Crockett, Houston County, TX in 1853. Closest
2 CONC brother, William, moved to Fannin County, TX, after the birth of his
2 CONC youngest daughter who is listed as born in Limestone County, AL in
2 CONC 1857. Their aged mother also moved to TX in those years. (See John
2 CONC Arledge)

2 CONT Joseph and William farmed the bottom blackland south of Bonham and
2 CONC south of Bois d'Arc Creek. William was married to Lydia's sister, Mary
2 CONC W. Slaughter, and they had eleven children. They lived on what was
2 CONC called Arledge Ridge, where they had a cotton gin, a store, and there
2 CONC were a church, a school, a blacksmith shop, and later a cemetery.
2 CONC Farther north, on William's land was a "slave" cemetery. Neither was
2 CONC listed in censuses as having slaves, but they did have hired hands,
2 CONC probably black, who probably took their name, as there were later
2 CONC listed Arleges and Arlidges living in Fannin County. There is still a
2 CONC cemetery and a church on Arledge Ridge on Hwy. 78, four miles south of
2 CONC Bonham.

2 CONT Joseph Cyrus was a trustee in the first Baptist church of Bonham. He
2 CONC died on January 27, 1855. Lydia was 35 and her oldest boy almost 16.
2 CONC Joseph is buried in the Arledge Ridge Cemetery.

2 CONT LYDIA ANN SLAUGHTER, b. April 24, 1818, NC, evidently managed the
2 CONC family farm all right with her oldest children. In the 1860 census she
2 CONC was listed as head of household and worth $8000 in land and $1000 in
2 CONC property. Her oldest son was married and on his own. In 1870 she lived
2 CONC in Bonham with her yougest son, a daughter and son-in-law. Her house
2 CONC was worth $2500. The oldest son was probably on the farm, or part of
2 CONC it. Lydia died March 16, 1871, and is buried on Arledge Ridge Cemetery
2 CONC beside her husband.

2 CONC encouraged by offers of land, so it may be assumed that the Arledge
2 CONC family's reason for coming to America was to acquire land. They may

2 CONC to have been tobacco, which was used as payment for debts.  See

1 NOTE John Aldrich and his wife were involved in a domestic dilemma which
2 CONC surely caused acute embarrassment to his clerical family. It seems
2 CONC that he was absent from home for some time, and, thinking him dead,
2 CONC his wife remarried one Edmund/Edward Boutman on February 2, 1596.
2 CONC John's reappearance and the resulting dilemma were addressed by Bishop
2 CONC Redman during his visit to the Diocese of Norwich in 1597; he noted,
2 CONC "Ann Aldrige. For having two husbands living." The problem was
2 CONC resolved, and she returned to her husband, John Aldrich.

1 NOTE It is unclear whether Clement died in Northumberland County VA where
2 CONC he lived or died in England where he was born. I suspect the former.
2 CONC Clement and Elizabeth were immigrants to Virginia.

2 CONT Clement was a joiner by trade and, in 1678, took Graves Garratt as an
2 CONC apprentice. In November, 1674, Clement and Thomas Flynt were requested
2 CONC by the court to inspect a building for its worthiness, and on November
2 CONC 19, 1679, he was paid for mending the parish church.
2 CONT
2 CONT On June 7, 1679 the Court of Northumberland ordered the list of
2 CONC tithables divided into forties; each group of forty was ordered to
2 CONC deliver an able man along with a horse, arms and other provisions to
2 CONC the house of Thomas Mathew. Clement was one of the men charged with
2 CONC the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co.
2 CONC Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26). On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed
2 CONC constable of Cherry Point.

2 CONT His will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99.
2 CONC Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire.

2 CONT No records of Clement's children, except for William's, are known of.
2 CONC Clement Jr.'s will was destroyed in the same courthouse fire that his
2 CONC father's was. So we don't know who Clement Sr.'s grandchildren were,
2 CONC other than William's offspring.

2 CONT Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which
2 CONC was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay.  He was
2 CONC a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still
2 CONC there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land,
2 CONC in the area known as Cherry Point Neck.

2 CONT On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100
2 CONC acres of land.  Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to
2 CONC Cloud [Claudius] Tullos.  It is possible that this Clement Aldridge
2 CONC was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk,
2 CONC England in 1668.  If so, he must have returned to England to marry
2 CONC her, for he was here before that date.  At any rate, the wife of
2 CONC Clement of Northumberland was Elizabeth.

2 CONT Many researchers think that he was the Clement Aldridge who was
2 CONC christened on 25 Sep. 1636 in Worstead, son of Clement and Susan
2 CONC Boswell Aldridge.

2 CONT Clement Aldridge/Arledge was a master joiner [carpenter].  There are
2 CONC several records proving this in Northumberland records.

2 CONT Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland.  He left six

1 NOTE Isaac probably moved from Northumberland County, VA, to New Bern,
2 CONC Craven Co., NC with his guardian, John Callahan, who went there after
2 CONC 1738. He was first apprenticed to Callahan, then made his ward. His
2 CONC apprenticeship would have ended about 1742.  He was to learn the trade
2 CONC of a weaver.  (It is somewhat unusual for the master to later be named
2 CONC guardian to his apprentices.  The best reason for it being done was so
2 CONC that he could take them with him when he left the county.) Isaac was
2 CONC born in December 1721, probably on Christmas day.  He was bound an
2 CONC apprentice to Callahan on 21 Aug. 1728, "he being six years old last
2 CONC Christmas," and was to serve to age 21.

2 CONT Six months later, Callahan was made guardian to both Isaac and Sarah.
2 CONC But he did not leave the county immediately.  He was still in
2 CONC Northumberland Co. in 1738, but left soon afterward.  The next record
2 CONC of him is in North Carolina.

2 CONT At some point Isaac moved to Fairfield County, South Carolina. He and
2 CONC his son, Isaac Jr. are listed as members of the Broad River Church.

2 CONT Isaac Arledge, son of William and Sarah Arledge, b. ca. 1722,
2 CONC Northumberland County, VA; d. bet. January 5 and November 8, 1790,
2 CONC Fairfield County, SC.  He married Anna ________, ca. 1740-45. On
2 CONC October 22, 1768, he was granted 200 acres of land in Craven County
2 CONC (later Fairfield County), SC, on the Wateree River, next to land he
2 CONC already had on the northwest side.  Other land around was vacant.  Not
2 CONC being an heir to any of his father's land, he had moved to SC to
2 CONC settle new land, apparently.  November 7, 1783, Isaac Arledge, planter
2 CONC of Camden District, sold 278 acres in Craven County, SC, south side of
2 CONC the Wateree River on Wateree Creek.  This land he had bought in 1774.
2 CONC He apparently prospered as a planter, as he left his children land,
2 CONC animals and slaves. In 1790 census he had 5 slaves.  His wife, Anna,
2 CONC survived him.

2 CONT Isaac Arledge and Anna's children were:

2 CONC executor of his father's will and got 100 acres where he dwelt and 1/5

2 CONC 1822, Fairfield County, SC.  He  was co-executor of his father's will
2 CONC and got 75 acres, upper part of plantation where Isaac dwelt, and 1/5

2 CONT 3. Huldah, b. ca. 1750; still alive in 1790.  Received one sorrel
2 CONC horse, 7 head of cattle and 1/5 remainder.
2 CONT 4. Rachel, b. ca. 1752; never married, was living with kin in Autuaga
2 CONC County, AL in 1850 at age 98. Received from father 1 black horse, 5
2 CONC head of cattle and 1/5 remainder.

2 CONT Highlights: In 1836 Robert's father James moved his family from
2 CONC Virginia to West Tennessee, in Haywood County. He married Martha Ann
2 CONC Tanner on October 14, 1837, and started his own farm. After going
2 CONC bankrupt, he started out for Arkansas on February 24, 1843. He then
2 CONC had three children. He arrived in Dallas County (then Clark County) on
2 CONC March 24, 1843. He worked hard as a hired laborer. His son David was
2 CONC bitten by a copperhead snake on September 7, 1843, and he died within
2 CONC 21 hours. Sometime later, the family moved to Princeton, Arkansas. He
2 CONC was ordained to preach in March 1854. His first pastorate was at Holly
2 CONC Spring, Arkansas. His second was at Princeton, where he stayed until
2 CONC 1858. He moved to Pine Bluff. In 1862 he moved to Grant County (then
2 CONC Saline).

2 CONT He describes his travails during the Civil War, being halfway between
2 CONC Confederate and Union posts. Both sides came and took what they wanted
2 CONC from he and his family. Many of his neighbors were killed.

2 CONC Yancey, and quite a bit about her family.  I have information on the
2 CONC ancestors of both John O. Tanner and Martha Ann's mother, Ann Crowder
2 CONC that I am will to share if you are interested.

2 CONT Before today, I only knew that Agnes had a sister Martha A. who
2 CONC married a Coleman.  I found that from probate records in Colorado Co.,
2 CONC TX where both Agnes and John O. Tanner died.  Ann Crowder Tanner had
2 CONC died and John O. remarried before he came to TX in the 1850's.

2 CONT I noticed that you had some Featherstons in your ancestry.  There are
2 CONC also some Featherstones in Ann Crowder's ancestry.  Charles
2 CONC (1634-1684) whose daughter Anne married Abraham Burton.

2 CONC the guest of the town. This committee was composed of Col. Gabriel
2 CONC Long and Captain Phillip Slaughter, who were companions in arms.
2 CONC LaFayette at this time was at Monticello, the home of Jefferson, where
2 CONC he was meeting his old friends, Madison, Monroe, Wm. Wirt and others.
2 CONC He was met by the Committee from Culpepper. They delivered the
2 CONC invitation, which was accepted.
