I suspect the former. 2 CONT Clement and Elizabeth were immigrants to Virginia. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clement was a joiner by trade and, in 1678, took Graves Garratt as an 2 CONT apprentice. In November, 1674, Clement and Thomas Flynt were requested 2 CONT by the court to inspect a building for its worthiness, and on November 2 CONT 19, 1679, he was paid for mending the parish church. 2 CONT 2 CONT On June 7, 1679 the Court of Northumberland ordered the list of 2 CONT tithables divided into forties; each group of forty was ordered to 2 CONT deliver an able man along with a horse, arms and other provisions to 2 CONT the house of Thomas Mathew. Clement was one of the men charged with 2 CONT the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co. 2 CONT Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26). On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed 2 CONT constable of Cherry Point. 2 CONT 2 CONT His will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99. 2 CONT Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire. 2 CONT 2 CONT No records of Clement's children, except for William's, are known of. 2 CONT Clement Jr.'s will was destroyed in the same courthouse fire that his 2 CONT father's was. So we don't know who Clement Sr.'s grandchildren were, 2 CONT other than William's offspring. 2 CONT 2 CONT The following is a Northumberland County VA court record from Patricia 2 CONT Daniels, Jan 26, 1997. 2 CONT 2 CONT Court 21 Sept 1699, page 66. He was 2 CONT a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still 2 CONT there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land, 2 CONT in the area known as Cherry Point Neck. 2 CONT 2 CONT On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100 2 CONT acres of land. Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to 2 CONT Cloud [Claudius] Tullos. It is possible that this Clement Aldridge 2 CONT was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk, 2 CONT England in 1668. If so, he must have returned to England to marry 2 CONT her, for he was here before that date. At any rate, the wife of 2 CONT Clement of Northumberland was Elizabeth. 2 CONT 2 CONT Many researchers think that he was the Clement Aldridge who was 2 CONT christened on 25 Sep. 1636 in Worstead, son of Clement and Susan 2 CONT Boswell Aldridge. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clement Aldridge/Arledge was a master joiner [carpenter]. There are 2 CONT several records proving this in Northumberland records. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland. He left six 2 CONT children, who were 2 CONT 2 CONT 1.
