A Guided Introduction to Ski Touring
This one-day course is designed for the downhill skier who wants to sample a great sport. Downhill skiers can find out what it’s like to ski without lifts, enjoying the quiet of winter wilderness and the good healthy exercise of hiking uphill. It’s like going for a snowshoe hike but with the bonus of a downhill run back to the lodge!
Curriculum
· Introduction to Avalanche awareness. (This is not an avalanche course.)
·
Winter medical issues.
· Trip planning.
· Equipment for ski touring
· Route planning
· Decision making process.
· Track setting.
· Survival skiing
There is considerable flexibility built into the delivery of this course. No course is exactly the same. Snow and weather conditions will dictate the order of presentation to some degree. Key topics will be constantly revisited during the program.
You should be a strong intermediate downhill skier (on either "telemark" or "alpine" gear) able to maintain control in all conditions. You need to be in good physical condition and able to ski with a small pack. No prior ski mountaineering experience needed.
We offer the following wilderness trips (see below):
2. Savant-Albany River - Aug. 2009
3. The Jumping Caribou River Northwoods Canoe Expedition - Aug. 2009
